Mental health in Pakistan

Mental health in Pakistan

Mental health in Pakistan: remains a topic of debate in recent years. The incidence and prevalence has increased considerably in the context of growing insecurity, terrorism, economic problems, political uncertainty, unemployment and social rupture. A fall below the poverty line by almost 39% of individuals is a worrying factor to note. Many people now have psychiatrists, probably due to awareness through the good work of the media. Although there are many things you can do to improve the mental health of the population in the areas of social improvement, economic and political harmony, etc, but the major topic of discussion is, to what extent we are in the areas of education,

Mental retardation

Mental retardation is a term used when a person has certain limitations in mental functioning and skills like communication that takes care of itself, and social skills. These limitations will cause a child to learn and develop more slowly than a typical child. Children with mental retardation may take longer to learn to speak, walk and take care of their personal needs such as dressing or eating.

  • Hereditary diseases. Sometimes mental retardation is caused by abnormal genes inherited from parents, errors in the genes combine, or for other reasons. Examples of genetic conditions are Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, and phenylketonuria (PKU).
  • Problems during pregnancy. Mental retardation may occur when the child does not develop inside the mother properly. For example, there may be a problem with the way cells divide the child as it grows. A woman who drinks alcohol or gets an infection like rubella during pregnancy can also have a baby with mental retardation.
  • Problems at birth. If your baby has problems during labor and childbirth, such as not getting enough oxygen, it can be mentally.
  • Health problems. Diseases like whooping cough, measles, meningitis can cause or developmental disabilities. Mental retardation can also be caused by extreme malnutrition (not eating right), does not receive sufficient care or exposure to toxic substances like lead and mercury.
